"Education is equipping our children to walk through doors of opportunity." L B Johnson
Why choose an independent school for your child?
Independent education offers a number of advantages for parents looking to choose the right school for their child. The high quality of teaching, discipline and an environment which enables children to take a responsible attitude to their work are some of the reasons why the sector continues to flourish. Although the number of school-aged children in the UK has fallen in recent years, numbers in the independent sector continue to rise.
So what makes an ISC school so attractive? After-hours care, a range of great indoor and outdoor activities and excellent sports are some of the reasons. Lower pupil/teacher ratios also mean your child will receive the specially tailored attention they need. Parents can choose from coeducation or single sex education and different boarding options offer flexibility for working parents and home-from-home comforts for their children.
Many people mistakenly believe that that independent education is only for the very wealthy. A recent survey carried out by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) found that significant numbers of pupils come from areas where the household income is below or equivalent to the national average. This proves that many parents from lower and middle incomes are prepared to make the financial sacrifices to secure a better education for their child.
To help with costs many schools offer some form of financial assistance in the form of scholarships and bursaries. Other charities and trusts may sometimes be able to help, too.
The Independent Schools Council information & advice service (ISCias) offers free and impartial advice on all aspects of independent education across the UK. Parents are free to contact the ISCias helpline on 0845 SCHOOLS (7246657) or visit www.isc.co.uk to search the appropriate schools that match their criteria.
